Frequently Asked Questions

How does acupuncture work?

Acupuncture promotes healing by reducing inflammation, relaxing tight muscles, and increasing blood circulation. Acupuncture points are sites to stimulate nerves, muscles, and connective tissue. This stimulation boosts the body’s natural pain killers and feel-good chemicals like endorphins. When needled, acupuncture points can regulate the way in which the body functions, re-establishing proper balance (homeostasis) and improving basic life functions like sleep and digestion.

does it hurt?

For most people acupuncture is a painless process. There can be some mild sensations like a temporary ache or a pinch, but most people find the experience deeply relaxing and restorative.

What if I'm afraid of needles?

That's ok! Know that acupuncture needles are nothing like the needles used in a doctor's office. Acupuncture needles are hair thin and very gentle needling technique is used. As an alternative, we have non-needling options to use in treatment. We will work with your comfort level while still ensuring a relaxing and effective treatment.

is acupuncture safe?

When performed by a licensed acupuncturist acupuncture is very safe. The World Health Organization endorses acupuncture for the treatment of many pain syndromes and other conditions. Acupuncture has been used safely in China and all around the world. All needles are sterile and single use only.

How should I prepare for my acupuncture treatment?

We recommend you wear loose fitted clothing to your appointment, and that you eat a little something prior to treatment. Water and snack bars are available at the clinic.

What should I expect at my acupuncture treatment?

Acupuncture is just one part of Chinese Medicine! The other parts include: herbal medicine, food therapy, herbal medicine, movement and massage. At your visit, in addition to a health history intake and an acupuncture treatment, we may also prescribe an herbal formula or discuss dietary therapy to further support your treatment goals. Massage techniques like Gua Sha, tui na, or cupping may be included. Lifestyle guidance like meditation, yoga, or movement therapies may also be recommended. How many treatments will I need?

Each situation is unique. The number of treatments needed varies for each individual and depends on the nature and duration of the issue.  Acute conditions respond well to a few treatments in a shorter period of time, and chronic conditions often require weekly treatments for a longer period of time. After their chief complaint is resolved, many patients chose to come in monthly for wellness and prevention.

Can I exercise after a treatment?

After receiving acupuncture, we recommend refraining from doing any intense exercise so that your treatment can best settle in. Gentle walking, swimming, and yoga are good alternatives to a high intensity workout after acupuncture. Be sure to drink plenty of water and supplement with electrolytes if you will be doing cardio or high intensity exercise after your treatment.

Can I get a treatment if I'm pregnant?

Acupuncture is safe, and wonderfully supportive for yourself and your baby throughout the entire pregnancy! Certain acupuncture points become off-limits when you're pregnant, and are not used until the very end of your third trimester when we are preparing your body for labor. Extra pillows and props are used to keep you as comfortable as possible during your treatment.

can i work with both practitioners?

Yes! We work as a team, sharing notes, discussing cases and new treatment approaches as needed. Our goal as a clinic is to be accessible, so that you may keep up with your treatment plan and see who you can when it works best for you.

do you accept insurance?

Our clinic does not accept insurance at this time. We will create an itemized insurance receipt with appropriate diagnostic codes for you to submit to your insurance company for reimbursement. You will pay us in full at the time of your appointment, and if you're treatment is covered, your insurance company will reimburse you directly.
