Acupuncture for Inflammatory Skin Conditions
A Resource for Patients and Providers
Acupuncture can be a wonderful complement to dermatological care for patients living with chronic inflammatory skin conditions. We commonly work with patients experiencing eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, chronic hives, acne, and other inflammatory or immune-mediated skin concerns.
In addition to treating skin symptoms directly, we focus on the systems that may be contributing to inflammation in the first place. This can include immune regulation, stress response, sleep quality, hormone balance, digestion, and overall nervous system health. Alongside acupuncture, we may also incorporate Chinese herbal medicine when appropriate.
We value an integrative approach to treating chronic skin issues and are always happy to work alongside our patients' dermatologists and other healthcare providers for the best possible outcomes.
How Acupuncture Helps
From a western physiology standpoint, acupuncture has been shown to:
- Regulate the Immune Response
Many inflammatory skin conditions involve an immune system that has become overactive or dysregulated. Acupuncture helps modulate inflammatory pathways and calm the immune response, which can help reduce the frequency and intensity of flare cycles over time.
- Calm the Stress Response
Stress is one of the most common triggers for skin flare-ups. Acupuncture helps regulate the nervous system and shift the body out of a chronic fight-or-flight state, promoting rest, recovery, and resilience.
- Reduce Itching and Histamine Activity
For patients dealing with eczema, hives, or other intensely itchy conditions, acupuncture can help reduce histamine activity and calm the itch-scratch cycle, providing symptom relief and improving quality of life.
- Support Healing
By improving circulation and lowering the body's overall inflammatory burden, acupuncture helps support the skin's natural healing process and improve recovery after flares.
The Chinese Medicine Perspective
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), we treat the pattern behind the diagnosis rather than the diagnosis itself.
Two patients with eczema, for example, may have completely different presentations and respond to different treatment approaches. We look at the whole picture (skin symptoms, digestion, sleep, stress levels, energy, and overall constitution) to determine the most appropriate treatment plan.
Some of the common patterns we see in inflammatory skin conditions include:
- Blood Heat
Often associated with red, hot, intensely itchy flares and rapid inflammation. This pattern is commonly seen in acute psoriasis or severe eczema flare-ups. Can get worse in hot temperatures.
- Damp-Heat
Characterized by weeping, oozing, crusting, or infected-looking lesions. This pattern is often associated with eczema that becomes moist or irritated.
- Blood Deficiency & Wind
Typically presents as dry, pale, chronically itchy skin that may seem to move around or worsen at night. This pattern is common in patients who are fatigued, stressed, or recovering from long-standing illness. Also common in women who are menstruating or postpartum.
- Lung & Wei (Defensive) Qi Deficiency
An atopic pattern frequently seen in patients with eczema who also experience allergies, asthma, or frequent illness. This is especially common in children.
Working Alongside Your Dermatologist
Acupuncture and Chinese medicine is a highly effective complement to conventional dermatological care.
While some patients turn to acupuncture for an all natural approach to skin health, many of our patients continue treatment with biologics, topical steroids, immunosuppressants, or other medications while receiving acupuncture. Because acupuncture has no pharmacological interactions, it can be safely integrated into most treatment plans. (Patients taking blood thinners may experience increased bruising, which we discuss during intake.)
Acupuncture may also be helpful:
During treatment gaps or insurance delays
While tapering topical steroids and other medication, in coordination with the prescribing physician
For managing stress-related flares
To support sleep, digestion, hormone balance, and other systems that may influence skin health
We believe the best outcomes come from collaborative care and are always happy to communicate with referring providers.
We Treat Kids, Too!
Atopic dermatitis is one of our most common pediatric presentations.
We treat infants, children, and adolescents using gentle, age-appropriate techniques that may include acupressure, shoni-shin (a non-invasive Japanese pediatric treatment), pediatric tui na massage, and traditional acupuncture for older children.
A parent or guardian is always present, and treatments are tailored to each child's comfort level and developmental stage.
A Whole-Person Approach to Healthier Skin
Every patient is different, and treatment plans are highly individualized. Because skin conditions are often chronic and influenced by many factors, treatment is usually a process rather than a quick fix. Most patients begin with weekly treatments for several weeks, with the goal of reducing inflammation, improving symptom control, and supporting the body's ability to heal over time.
As symptoms improve, visits are typically spaced farther apart. Treatment plans are always tailored to the individual and may include both acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine.
Whatever the case, our goal remains the same: to help patients explore a whole-person approach to healthier skin from the inside out.
