Acupuncture & Chinese Medicine in Charleston, SC
Thoughtful care for your whole health.
Acupuncture and Chinese medicine offer a whole-person approach to health, combining thousands of years of traditional medicine with a modern understanding of the body.
At Balance, we don't just look at where you hurt or the symptom that brought you in. We take time to understand your health history, symptoms, patterns, and goals so we can create care that's specific to you.
What Is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a form of medicine that has been practiced for thousands of years. It involves placing sterile, hair-thin needles at specific points on the body to influence the nervous system, circulation, muscles, and other physiological processes.
In Chinese medicine, acupuncture is used to help restore balance and improve the way the body functions as a whole. Modern research has found that acupuncture can affect the nervous system and help regulate pain, inflammation, stress responses, hormones, digestion, and other body systems. This makes it a useful complement to modern healthcare and a treatment option for a wide range of concerns.
At Balance, we draw from both Classical Chinese Medicine and modern approaches to health care, combining traditional diagnostic methods with our understanding of current health science. Your treatment is based on the individual in front of us, not simply the diagnosis or symptom on your chart.

More Than Acupuncture
Acupuncture is often just one part of your treatment. Depending on your needs, we may incorporate additional Chinese medicine therapies to support your care.
Acupuncture Looks at the Whole Pattern & the Whole Person
There isn’t one acupuncture treatment for everyone, even when two people have the same diagnosis.
In Chinese medicine, we look at the patterns behind your symptoms and how they connect to the rest of your health. Your constitution, symptoms, health history, emotions, lifestyle, and other factors all give us information about what may be going on. That means two people with the same diagnosis, like endometriosis, may have very different patterns and need very different approaches.
This is what makes acupuncture such an individualized medicine. We’re not simply treating the diagnosis. We’re treating you.
Your care can also evolve over time as your symptoms change, your health shifts, or your goals become clearer. And because acupuncture can complement conventional healthcare, it can be used alongside the doctors, specialists, therapists, and other providers already involved in your care.
New to Acupuncture?
Never had acupuncture before? No problem. You don’t need to know anything about it before you come in.
We’ll explain what to expect, answer your questions, and make sure you feel comfortable before treatment begins. Your first visit includes a thorough health history, time to talk about what’s going on and what you’d like to work on, and your first acupuncture treatment. Additional therapies may be included when they make sense for your care.
