Acupuncture + IVF: Supporting Your Body Through Fertility Treatment
A majority of our practice focuses on women’s health, and fertility is a big part of what we do. We work with many women who are trying to conceive naturally, as well as patients who are navigating more complex fertility challenges and assisted reproductive treatments like IVF.
IVF can be an exciting step toward building your family, but it can also be physically and emotionally demanding. Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine can be a wonderful complement to your fertility care, working alongside your reproductive endocrinologist and fertility clinic to support you throughout the process.
How can acupuncture support fertility?
From a Chinese Medicine perspective, fertility is about creating the right environment for conception and pregnancy to occur. We look at the health of the menstrual cycle, blood flow, hormonal balance, digestion, stress, sleep, and the overall health of the reproductive system.
Acupuncture treatments are individualized based on your unique needs, but fertility care may focus on supporting circulation to the reproductive organs, regulating the menstrual cycle, reducing stress, supporting healthy digestion, and creating an environment that is as balanced and nourished as possible.
When you're preparing for IVF, we can use acupuncture as part of that same whole-person approach while your fertility team focuses on the medical aspects of your treatment.
What does the research say about acupuncture and IVF?
Research on acupuncture and IVF has been ongoing for many years, and the results are encouraging. Some systematic reviews and meta-analyses have found improvements in clinical pregnancy rates and, in some analyses, live birth rates when acupuncture is used alongside IVF.
A 2023 systematic review and meta-analysis looked at 58 randomized controlled trials involving more than 10,000 women undergoing IVF. The researchers found that acupuncture was associated with higher clinical pregnancy rates and a modest increase in live birth rates (differences in study design and other limitations did exist).
A newer systematic review published in 2025 also found that acupuncture may improve clinical pregnancy rates and reduce anxiety during IVF, and the authors emphasized that more high-quality research is needed.
Overall, research suggests that acupuncture may be a helpful complementary therapy for some women undergoing fertility treatment, particularly as part of a comprehensive approach to reproductive and emotional health.
Acupuncture can support more than just the numbers
IVF is about much more than egg retrieval and embryo transfer. The process can bring a tremendous amount of physical and emotional stress, and taking care of yourself during treatment matters.
One area where the research is particularly encouraging is anxiety. A 2022 systematic review and meta-analysis of eight trials involving more than 2,200 participants found that acupuncture was associated with a small but significant reduction in IVF-related anxiety.
And this is something we see in the clinic all the time. Having a place to slow down, breathe, receive treatment, and have someone supporting you through the process can be incredibly valuable when you're navigating the ups and downs of fertility treatment.
What are the potential benefits of acupuncture during IVF?
Depending on your individual needs, acupuncture may be used to support:
Stress and anxiety during fertility treatment
Healthy circulation to the reproductive organs
Menstrual cycle regulation
Endometrial and uterine health
Digestion and overall nourishment
Sleep and nervous system regulation
Recovery following egg retrieval
Relaxation around embryo transfer
Overall physical and emotional wellbeing during the IVF process
Some newer research is also exploring how acupuncture may influence egg and embryo quality. A 2026 systematic review and meta-analysis of 18 randomized trials found evidence suggesting improvements in high-quality embryo rates and fertilization rates, although the researchers noted that the effects varied depending on the treatment approach and patient population.
This is an area of research we are excited about and will continue to watch closely.
When should you start acupuncture for IVF?
If you have the time and flexibility, we generally like to begin working together about three months before an egg retrieval.
This gives us time to support your health before the IVF cycle begins and allows us to work with your individual needs rather than trying to do everything at the last minute.
During this time, we may focus on things like digestion, sleep, stress, menstrual cycle regulation, circulation, and overall nourishment. We can also adjust your treatment as you move into ovarian stimulation and closer to your retrieval.
Once your IVF cycle begins, your treatments become more specific to where you are in the process. Treatment timing may be coordinated around stimulation, egg retrieval, and embryo transfer, and we'll work closely with the timeline provided by your fertility clinic.
There is no single acupuncture protocol that is right for every IVF patient. Your treatment plan should be individualized based on your health, your fertility history, your IVF protocol, and where you are in the process.
You don't have to do this alone
About half of the fertility patients we see are also undergoing assisted reproductive treatments such as IVF, and many are referred to us by fertility clinics and reproductive physicians who value an integrative approach to care.
We see ourselves as part of your fertility team and your village. Our goal is never to replace the care you're receiving from your reproductive endocrinologist. Instead, we work alongside your medical team to support you through the process.
IVF can be a long road, and there are a lot of appointments, medications, decisions, and emotions along the way. Having someone in your corner who is focused on your whole health can make a meaningful difference in how you experience the journey.
If you're preparing for IVF or are already in the middle of treatment, we'd love to talk with you about how acupuncture and Chinese Medicine may fit into your fertility plan.
We're here to support you every step of the way. 💗
